Telefunken HiFi Studio 1

No other 80's portable sounds as precise, warm, and detailed as the Studio 1. This is because of its superior amps, crossovers, and speakers. The bass fills a room....it's that warm. And the treble is extremely detailed and precise. It sounds like a small home theater system. It produces 2x30 watts into 4 ohms at 1kHz and only 0.5% distortion. The front panel gets very warm!

There were two versions: The Studio 1, and the Studio 1M. Technically they are identical, but the Studio 1M has a Metal tape setting, bigger dustcaps, and a smaller volume knob. Also, the Studio 1M tunes to 108 MHz, while the Studio 1 only goes to 104 MHz. Both of them can be found on Ebay Germany every single week. There was an Italian version called the Imperial Mini Rack 250 Hifi. It appears to be identical except for the brand name.

It measures 638mm wide, 315mm high, and 167mm deep. It was available in silver and brown. It features Telefunken's proprietary HIGH COM noise reduction system (similar to Dolby). Its total weight is 13.8 KG (30.1 lbs), not including batteries. You should not use batteries anyway, because it would not produce as much power as it does on AC. By the way, you can change the voltage from 220 to 110 by removing the rear panel and relocating the fuses. There are 3 fuse slots. For 220V you put one fuse in slot #2 (the middle slot). For 110V you put fuses in slots #1 and #3.

Known flaws include blown light bulbs (there should be 4, one for the tuner, one for the tuning strength meter, and one for each VU meter). And some people have reported malfunctioning tweeters, perhaps due to a blown tweeter, bad capacitor, or bad crossover. And be careful not to abuse the tape keys, because some owners have said they broke and fell down inside the case.
